The CPL Island Games are set to begin on Thursday August 13 in Charlottetown at the University of PEI.
There is an old proverb that says revenge is a confession of pain.
Cavalry FC was by far and away the most talented club in the Canadian Premier League during the inaugural 2019 season. They won both the spring and fall seasons but couldn’t finish when it counted most losing to Forge FC in the CPL final 2-0 on aggregate.
Cavalry returns a strong core of their talented and deep roster from 2019 led by goalkeeper Marco Carducci who is the best in the CPL. Carducci made history by being the first player from the CPL to be called up to the Canadian National team and he was also named the Golden Glove winner of 2019.
They did lose a few key players from last season including their leading scorer Dominque Molanga who moved to the Bulgarian league as well as Joel Waterman who was sold to the Montreal Impact making the 24-year-old defender the first CPL player ever to transfer to MLS.
However, Cavalry has a deep enough roster to shoulder the losses and they have added a few key signings as well that should allow the Calgary side more depth heading into the Island Games.
31 year-old striker Marcus Haber was a key acquisition for Cavalry ahead of the Island Games. Haber has been apart of several storied clubs in England and Scotland over his career including West Bromwich Albion, Notts County, Dundee, St. Johnstone and more. He has also made 27 appearances for the Canadian National team.
When you have a motivated team seeking revenge coupled with a deep and talented roster, it’s a formula for success that should make Cavalry FC the winners of the 2020 CPL Island Games.
