HFX Wanderers the story of the Island Games

HFX Wanderers performance during the 2020 Canadian Premier League season has been a revelation.

The biggest surprise of the CPL Island Games series has been the play of the HFX Wanderers. HFX were one of four clubs to advance to the group stage along with Cavalry FC, Forge FC and Pacific FC.

After two games played, HFX look to be in a good spot to advance to the CPL final with a 2-1 win over Cavalry and a 1-1 draw with Forge. They can advance to the final with a win on Tuesday over Pacific (8pm ET) as well as with a tie and a Forge loss to Cavalry.

HFX have been the most dynamic and exciting squad to watch during the Island Games led by a pair of attackers who lead the CPL in scoring.

Akeem Garcia leads the league with six goals followed by Joao Morelli in second place with four goals (Morelli also missed two games following a red card vs York 9).

Garcia is a 23 year-old forward in his second season with HFX who has played internationally for Trinidad and Tobago and looks to be a lock to be named MVP of the 2020 season.

Morelli is a 24 year-old Brazilian who has spent time with English clubs Middlesborough and Fleetwood Town during his pro career.

Aside from the dynamic duo upfront, HFX goalkeeper Christian Oxner has also been a key figure in the clubs success in PEI. The 24 year-old Halifax native will also be in the conversation for the Golden Glove winner if HFX can continue their current form.

Heading into the Island Games, most pundits (including me) had pegged Cavalry and Forge as the runaway favourites to win the CPL in 2020.

However, HFX could be the gate crashers who walk away with the North Star Shield come September 19 in the CPL final.
